50.  Human Capital
(April 2001)
The human capital agenda is a response to the reengineering of the workplace that occurred in the last two decades, driven by the need to increase profitability and competitiveness. The New Economy organisation, with its lean, flattened structure and an emphasis on entrepreneurial skills requiring a different workplace culture has produced a new type of worker and increased the complexity of human capital. This brief looks at definitions of human capital, some ways in which companies can cultivate their human capital and maximise the return on investment (ROI), measurements of human capital investment and human capital in library services.
